Special Place in Sarawak
1. Kuching Waterfront
Kuching Waterfront, which lines the south bank of Sarawak River,
is THE place to sample the city's cosmopolitan vibes. During the daytime, it
offers scenic views of the Astana, Fort Margherita and the Malay kampungs
across the river; but night-time is when it really comes alive! It seems like
half of the city is out meeting friends, watching a show, or just shooting the
breeze. For something different, why not try jetty-hopping along the river on
the local Penambang boats, and savour the different sights, sounds (and
delicacies!) between the two riverbanks.

Astana
Fort Margherita
A result of a major restoration and land reclamation project, Kuching Waterfront today is the most popular meeting place in the city. Drab warehouses have been replaced with an almost 900m long esplanade, beautifully landscaped and dotted with wooden benches, food stalls, restaurants and entertainment facilities. A number of older buildings have been preserved and incorporated into the design, including the Chinese History Museum, the Sarawak Steamship Building, an open-air theatre and the Square Tower. Modern additions to the Waterfront include a restored Chinese pavilion, colourful musical fountains, and a number of modern sculptures.
2. BAKO NATIONAL PARK
This is the panoramic view of Bako National Park at the rugged sand stone peninsula to the east of the Bako River. The forest reserve is home to many precious species of flora and fauna for example the near extinction proboscis monkeys. The park is accessible from Kuching along a 37 km road and a short ferry ride across Sungai Santubong.
3. SARAWAK CULTURAL VILLAGE
One of the many eco tourism destinations in
Sarawak. Seven unique traditional houses, scattered over a beautiful 17-acres
of natural jungle in the foothills of the famous Santubong Mountain, gives you
the perfect introduction to Sarawak, its people and its cultures. It's just 40
minutes drive from Kuching, 5 minutes walk from Holiday Inn Resort Damai Beach,
5 minutes walk from Holiday Inn Resort Damai Lagoon and 10 minutes walk from
Damai Golf Course.
4. LUAK BAY, MIRI
Set by the South China Sea, Miri offers great
sites for beaches and spectacular stone formations by the seaside. The Tanjung
cliff is one of the earliest weekend recreational spots frequented by the
locals.
5. MULU NATIONAL PARK
This picture shows the majestic range of Gunung
Mulu in the morning light during clear weather. Lush green of virgin tropical
forests are gazetted and protected as national park. Hidden underneath the
forested slopes of these mountains are the remarkable limestones caves system,
consists of the Sarawak Chamber which could house 40 Boeing 747, the Deer Cave
and the Clearwater Cave, both of amazing features.
Races in Sarawak
Sarawak has more than 40 ethnic groups , with
their own distinct language, culture and lifestyle. Cities and larger town are
populated predominantly by Malays,Melanaus,Chinese and a smaller percentage of
Ibans and Bidayuhs who have migrated from their home-villages for employment
reasons. Sarawak is rather distinctive from the rest of Malaysia in that there
is only a small community of Indians living in the state.
Food
1. SARAWAK LAKSA
The Sarawak Laksa is essentially vermicelli
rice noodles (bee hoon), cooked in a shrimp-based broth that is made to thicken
with coconut milk. This dish is served with generous amounts of crunchy bean
sprouts, a few boiled prawns and garnished with shredded chicken and slivers of
egg omelette. For added spice, there's the thick sambal paste that is usually
served on the side. For some extra pizzazz you can squeeze some lime juice
(limau kasturi) into your dish as well.
2. AYAM PANSUH
The Iban dish of Manok Pansoh (ayam Pansuh) or
chicken in bamboo is a must try. Cut chicken pieces, mushrooms, lemongrass and
tapioca leaves are stuffed into bamboos and cooked over an open fire. This
seals in the flavour and the result is succulent and juicy tender chicken, with
gravy hinting of lemongrass and bamboo.
3. IKAN TERUBUK MASIN
The numerous waterways provide the people with
an abundance of fresh water fish like the Tilapia, which incidentally is the
most widely cultivated. it's no surprise then that some of the popular
Sarawakian dishes also include these 'gifts' from the sea. The salted ikan
terubok is sold in markets around Sarawak.
4. DABAI
Dabai is a seasonal fruit. The skin of the
fruit is black while the flesh is yellow in colour. The seed is also yellow and
diamond shaped and is also edible if you can crack it open. The Dabai is a hard
fruit but when you soaked for 10-15 minutes in semi hot water with a bit of
salt, it becomes soft and edible and the texture becomes like dates.
